As a Christmas gift, I gave my partner, who has red-green colorblindness, a pair of EnChroma glasses. I had hopes they would make a positive impact on his daily life. However, after trying them out, we were both underwhelmed.
In this review, I’ll share our personal experience with EnChroma glasses and provide an in-depth look at what they are, how they work, and whether they’re worth the investment.
What is EnChroma Glasses?
EnChroma glasses are specialized glasses designed to help people with color vision deficiency (CVD), also known as colorblindness. They use a specific type of filter to enhance color perception and are available in various styles and prescriptions. The company behind EnChroma, EnChroma Inc., claims that their glasses can help people with CVD better distinguish between colors, see more vivid colors, and even experience colors they’ve never seen before.
My Personal Experience with EnChroma Glasses
I’ll start by saying that I was really excited for my partner to try out the EnChroma glasses.I hadseen the ads on Facebook, and the promises of “unlocking a world of color” for my partner, who is red and green colorblind, seemed like a great gift.
His experience was however a letdown from the start. When he put on the glasses, he said it looked and felt “weird.” The lenses seemed to add a strange tint to everything, but didn’t really improve their color vision in any meaningful way. The only noticeable effect was a slight increase in color vividness. After a few minutes of wearing the glasses, he said that his eyes started to feel strained.
But the biggest issue was the red hue that surrounded everything. For someone with red and green color blindness, this was very problematic. Instead of helping to distinguish between colors, the glasses seemed to even make things worse.
The quality of the frame was inferior, the material felt cheap and flimsy, and the construction seemed shoddy. For a product that costs hundreds of dollars, I sincerely expected a lot more attention to detail and quality.
The most annoying aspect of this is that we were told that the glasses would allow my partner see “new colors” for the first time. This is not only misleading but also cruel, giving people with color vision deficiency false hope.
Pros
- Stylish frames (although the quality is subpar)
What I Hated About These Glasses
- Inferior frame quality
- Lenses add a strange tint to everything
- No noticeable improvement in color vision
- False advertising
- Overpriced
Features
- Claimed to help people with color vision deficiency (CVD) better distinguish between colors
- Specialized lenses designed to enhance color perception
- Available in various styles and prescriptions
How Much Are They Sold?
EnChroma glasses are sold in the price range of $349-$649, depending on the model and prescription.
Is It Worth It?
In my opinion, no, EnChroma glasses are not worth the investment. While they may provide some minor benefits, to maybe a small group of people, the high price point and exaggerated marketing claims make them a poor value. Additionally, the quality of the frames and lenses are pretty poor considering the price point.
Alternatives
- Oxy-Iso Glasses
- ColorCorrection Glasses by Uvex
- Eclipse Glasses by Eagle Eyes
- Color Enhancing Glasses by Gunnar Optiks
Conclusion
All in all, I would not recommend EnChroma glasses to anyone. Save your money and stick with traditional glasses or explore other options that have been proven to be effective. While the idea of “unlocking a world of color” might seem appealing, the reality is that EnChroma glasses are little more than a gimmick.
