Equifax Settlement Payment Matters Arising
The Equifax data breach which occurred in 2017 compromising private records of 147.9 million Americans, 15.2 million British citizens and about 19,000 Canadian citizens, is rolling out second settlement payout this December 2024.
Reactions from claimants range between shock and anger. The amounts received are below expectations and not up to the amount claimed.
On reddit.com, some claimants have these to say ”$7.44 is what I received today, if I knew that going in, I would never would have applied. I know they also offered credit monitoring for I think it was a year, but I have lifetime credit monitoring so I opted for the cash. Happy spending”
Interestingly, the payout which is via virtual card is being rejected by Venmo, PayPal and Apple Pay. Spending has to be done in person.

i received $5.21 on a prepaid card in December 2022. how is that payment even justified for someone who personal information was breached? i think the payment was very unreasonable and unacceptable. You cannot do anything with $5.21 these days. i believe all the money went to the lawyers. which without us clients having our information breached they would have no reason to be in court on our behalf.
received a check for 12.77 and then an email advising me the week of 12/16 i would be getting instructions for an additional payment in the form of a virtual pre-paid card.
Yes I too got $7.44 wow only took forever and what was the point. They are basically say the stress and my time for researching my potential identity theft is worth about a $.50 and hour and my personal stress value worth zero dollars, how much did the lawyers make? I have lost faith in our legal system and processes
