FACT CHECK: Is Leviathan sea monster real or fake?

By Samantha Mar12,2025

If you’ve heard the word Leviathan, chances are it came up in some ancient text, maybe a Bible passage, or the recent viral footage of a sea monster found by Google Earth. But just how much of the Leviathan legend is based on reality? Let’s break it down.

What Is a Leviathan?

The Leviathan is a creature from myth—specifically, from ancient religious texts and folklore. Most famously, it’s mentioned in the Bible, particularly in the Book of Job, where it’s described as a monstrous sea creature. Some sources describe it as a giant serpent or dragon, with other ancient cultures portraying similar creatures. Its role? To embody chaos, destruction, or the untamable forces of nature.

Is the Leviathan a Real Sea Monster?

Nope. There’s no physical evidence to suggest that a giant sea monster, like the Leviathan exists or ever existed. The stories and videos are deeply rooted in mythology and artificial intelligence. What we do have, however, are real creatures like whales, giant squids, and other large sea life that might have inspired these myths in the first place.

In fact, ancient people—who didn’t have access to the technology or understanding of the ocean we have today—would have encountered massive sea creatures and described them in exaggerated ways. A whale could easily be mistaken for a sea monster, especially when seen from a distance.

There have been no verified sightings of a Leviathan in the real world. Throughout history, people have claimed to see giant sea creatures, but these sightings are usually explained by misidentified animals or exaggerations. A famous example is the story of the Kraken, a giant octopus-like creature that was said to pull ships under the sea. While there’s no Kraken, we now know that giant squids do exist, though they’re much smaller than the ones described in folklore.

Could a Leviathan Exist?

In theory, a creature as massive as the Leviathan could exist in the ocean. But if it did, we would have likely found evidence by now. The ocean is vast, but we’ve explored enough of it that any giant creature living in the deep would’ve left some sort of trace—whether through sightings, carcasses, or bones. The fact that we haven’t discovered anything remotely resembling the Leviathan suggests that it’s pure myth.

Where Did the Idea of the Leviathan Come From?

The idea of a giant sea monster didn’t originate with the Bible. Various cultures across the globe have tales of massive, ocean-dwelling beasts. For example, the ancient Babylonians had their own myth of a great sea serpent called Tiamat, and the Norse had Jörmungandr, a serpent that encircled the world. It’s likely these ideas were inspired by real creatures or natural phenomena, like massive waves, storms, and shipwrecks.

In ancient cultures, the Leviathan wasn’t just a terrifying creature. It symbolized something much deeper: chaos and the unknown. The Leviathan was used to show the limits of human power and to emphasize the supremacy of divine forces. It was a symbol of nature’s immense power, something that could not be tamed or controlled.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the Leviathan is a myth. It’s part of a long tradition of sea monsters and giant beasts that have captured the human imagination for centuries. While no Leviathan has ever been found, the creature’s symbolism continues to influence stories and ideas to this day. So, don’t worry about running into one while you’re out on the open ocean.
