Does the Zappify really get rid of mosquitoes?
The makers of Zappify claims this portable zapper is very effective in killing mosquitoes, but is it too good to be true? I tested the Zappify 2.0 at home to see if it is worth its $43 price.
How The Zappify 2.0 Mosquito Zapper Works
The Zappify 2.0 portable bug zapper uses UV light and electricity to eliminate mosquitoes, bugs and flying insects. It works this way; attracting flying bugs and mosquitoes with UV light, and zapping them with the electricity coil surrounding the device. Pretty much simple, right? I decided to put its efficiency to test in our porch which always have mosquitoes swarming.
Unboxing and Trying The Zapper
The Zappify 2.0 comes with a white USB charging cord and an instruction manual. After charging, I placed the zapper on my porch all through the night, but found only three dead mosquitoes the next morning.
I was totally disappointed as the advertisements online boldly claims Zappify really works. If it could only kill three mosquitoes and two gnats all through the night (8hrs), it certainly isn’t worth buying. Furious, I did some research online about the efficiency of mosquito zappers. Here’s what I found;
- Mosquitoes are not attracted to ultraviolet light in the way that many other insects are.
In 2020, two research student ”Timothy Frick and Douglas Tallamy” from the University of Delaware checked through 14,000 insects killed in six zappers in different spots around Newark, Delaware, and found that only 31 were biting gnats or mosquitoes — that’s less than one-quarter of one percent”.
- The large number of non-harmful insects killed by the zappers can take a heavy toll on the ecosystem.
Should You Buy This Mosquito Zapper?
If you’re looking for an effective mosquito killer I honestly wouldn’t recommend Zappify 2.0. It doesn’t really work. Then, there’s the problem of being sold with lots of hype, misinformation and misleading ads. The hundreds of positive reviews online are sponsored and paid for by the affiliate marketers selling this zapper.
Secondly, the cost is on the high side. This exact make of zapper is sold for $1 on Aliexpress.com (see image below). So drop-shippers and affiliate marketers buy the lamp in bulk, pay for advertising, gives the device a fancy name and then pads up the price. You might think you’re getting a high valued product but you’re just paying more for less.
I’m presently saving up to buy DynaTrap. I read it is an effective mosquito zapper as it uses both UV Light and an exclusive Ti02 titanium dioxide-coated surface, which creates a reaction to produce a CO2 trail that mimics human breath and is irresistible to mosquitoes. Once attracted to the unit, the powerful, whisper-quiet fan draws the insects and mosquitoes into the retaining cage where they dehydrate and die, typically within 24 hours.
